Eagles lose Ajayi to torn ACL

PHILADELPHIA, PA –

The Eagles running back committee lost a crucial piece today, as ESPN’s NFL Insider Adam Schefter recently reported RB Jay Ajayi has torn his ACL and his season is done.

The video below shows where it seems most likely that Ajayi suffered the knee injury as he plants awkwardly and has his foot slide out from underneath him as he fumbles. Ajayi did return for the first play on the next series, but a false start penalty was called. He never saw the field after that.

Sideline reporter Erin Andrews was the first to report that Jay Ajayi was dealing with a knee injury and was questionable to come back into the game in the final minute of the third quarter.

Ajayi struggled to stay healthy all season, battling various injuries to stay in the lineup. He missed significant time against Tampa Bay and was a non-factor early in most of the games this season as it seemed the Eagles were preserving his carries for later in the contests.

The Eagles will be thin heading into New York for a Thursday night showdown with the Giants. Wendell Smallwood and Josh Adams are the only healthy running backs on the depth chart as neither Corey Clement or Darren Sproles have recorded a carry in the last two weeks.

The question looms on the Eagles exploring Le’Veon Bell as a trade option now that they are thin. Multiple reports tied Bell to the Eagles last week.

The 2019 NFL Draft holds 12 picks for the Eagles. If they want to make a splash in an attempt to repeat they need to move some pieces. The Steelers are asking for a 2nd and a good player. We have two 2nd round picks. If we trade one of them and lose Bell at the end of the season we receive a 3rd as a compensatory pick. This would prove that the “hungry dogs” are still actually hungry. Other names to keep in mind are Doug Martin (barely getting snaps), Frank Gore (holding back Kenyan Drake), Ameer Abdullah (buried on Detroit depth chart), Mark Ingram (Kamara seems to be the guy), and maybe even reach out to teams for Alex Collins (being misused in Baltimore), Spencer Ware (same yards per touch as Kareem when given the opportunity), or even further reaches like Jeremy Langford and Charcandrick West.
