Defense Collapses Late in OT Loss to Titans

PHILADELPHIA, PA –

The Titans defense is no joke. The Eagles found that out the hard way in a tough 26-20 OT loss to the Titans on Sunday afternoon. Carson Wentz felt the heat as he was sacked 4 times from Mike Vrabel’s defense. The Eagles’ offensive line was continuously beaten, and Wentz paid the price. Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel and Offensive Coordinator, and Sean McVay disciple, Matt LaFleur had an outstanding day coaching against Doug Pederson and Jim Schwartz’s defense. Vrabel’s defense consistently gave the Eagles O-Line fits with his blitz packages, and LaFleur with his offense in the second half and overtime. In overtime, the Titans converted on 4th down 3 times to stun the Eagles.

The Eagles’ offense was very ebb and flow. Some drives looked like the Eagles of last year, and others were atrocious. Wentz created some rhythm in the second quarter, continually hitting Zach Ertz on 10-15 yard passes until breaking one deep to Jordan Matthews for a touchdown. After going into halftime up 10-3 and scoring an early TD in the 3rd, the Eagles let up 17 unanswered points and broke down later in overtime. Marcus Mariota’s injury earlier in the year did not hinder him in this game. He and Corey Davis torched the Eagles defense. Mariota finished with 344 passing yards and 3 td, and also led the Titans in rushing with 46 yards. Davis had 9 catches for 161 yards and the game winning TD in overtime.

The Eagles defense was exposed in the second half of the game. Mariota’s mobility, and more surprisingly his arm, gave the Eagles fits. Jalen Mills was beaten a few times down the field, and Corey Graham played a 4th and long poorly to give up a first down. The loss of Rodney McLeod for the year was definitely felt. Both the Titans and the Eagles suffered from multiple dropped balls including a few crucial ones on 3rd down by Nelson Agholor. Alshon Jeffery looked great in his return from shoulder surgery and hauled in 8 catches for 105 yards and a TD. Ertz also had 10 catches for 112 yards.

(RECAP) – chronologically

The Titans received the ball first, and after a dropped pass from Jonnu Smith and a missed throw to Corey Davis, settled for a 42 yard field goal from Ryan Succop.

The Eagles were able to get on the board in the second quarter with a 56 yard TD pass to Jordan Matthews. The drive was set up with a few 10-15 yard passes to Ertz, followed by the bomb to Matthews. Late in the 1st half, Mariota threw a pick to rookie Avonte Maddox which led to a short 27 yard FG for Jake Elliott. The Eagles went into halftime up 10-3.

The Eagles got the ball to begin the second half and proceeded to have a 12 play, 75 yard drive which ended in an Alshon Jeffery 16 yard TD pass in which he used his size to make a contested catch in the end zone. Following this drive, the Eagles gave up a 8 play 75 yard drive which ended in a 2 yard TD run for Mariota.

The following possession for the Eagles ended with Wentz getting hit hard and fumbling and turning it over to the Titans who then hit a 33 yard field goal to make it 17-13 Eagles. The Eagles went three and out on the next drive which gave the Titans the chance to take the lead, which they did with a 16 yard TD pass from Mariota to Tajae Sharpe for a 20-17 lead.

After a couple empty drives, the Eagles got a huge 42 yard punt return from DeAndre Carter which led to the game tying 30 yard field goal from Elliott.

In OT, the Eagles got the ball first and were able to drive down the field and kick a 37 yard field goal. The Titans, with the ability to tie the game at 23 or go for the win, responded with a 16 play drive which ended with a Corey Davis 10 yard TD pass from Mariota to win the game 26-23. The Titans were able to complete 3 4th downs on the drive.

What’s Next: The Eagles drop to 2-2 and the Titans move to 3-1. Currently, the Eagles are in a tie for second in the division with the Cowboys. The Redskins will remain in 1st place at 2-1 as they are on a Bye.

The Eagles face a tough task at home next week to the Minnesota Vikings in a rematch of the NFC Championship game from last season. The Vikings are coming off a shootout 38-31 loss to the LA Rams.
