PHILADELPHIA, PA –

Carson Wentz and the Eagles’ offensive skeleton crew fell just short in Atlanta, losing to the Falcons by a final score of 24-20 on Sunday Night Football. The Eagles are now 1-1 on the season.

Wentz lead a fantastic second-half comeback after another miserable start through the first two quarters and took the lead with just over three minutes remaining. However, the Falcons converted a 4th & 3 and much more as Julio Jones took a screen pass into the end zone to give the Falcons the lead and, ultimately, their first victory of the season.

Before the fourth quarter fireworks yet again between these two teams, momentum switched hands half a dozen times as both teams committed their share of turnovers. None was bigger for the Eagles than Nathan Gerry‘s red-zone interception to keep the game close. However, looking back on it, a fumble by Corey Clement on the second-half kickoff return that lead to an Atlanta TD was the toughest pill to swallow.

The Eagles entered halftime down 10-6 after failing to score in the first quarter for the second straight game – something they struggle with all of last season.

Injuries were the story for both teams in this matchup. For the Eagles, they were left without Dallas Goedert, Alshon Jeffery, and DeSean Jackson, while Jason Kelce, Jason Peters, and Nelson Agholor all missed offensive snaps. Timmy Jernigan and Corey Clement were removed from the game as well.

Perhaps the biggest miscue of the game was a dropped pass by Agholor with under a minute to go after beating the coverage that likely would have led to a game-winning touchdown. All told, Agholor was the leading receiver for the Eagles with 8 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.

Wentz took a beating all night and finished 25/43 for 231 yards and one passing touchdown while adding one running touchdown. The running backs finished with 21 carries for 49 total yards.

Sidney Jones, Nathan Gerry, and Ronald Darby all collected interceptions; however, Darby gave up two early touchdowns.

In a desperate situation, Atlanta claimed victory, knocking the Eagles to 1-1 on the season. The Eagles will try to recover and will look forward to a week three matchup against the Detroit Lions team who won earlier today against the LA Chargers.
