The Eagles began the 2019 offseason $9 million over the expected NFL salary cap. Over the past month, Philadelphia made the decision to let Nick Foles walk into free agency. Howie Roseman restructured a few contracts and extended a couple of players. Now, after agreeing to a trade with the Patriots including Michael Bennett, the Eagles find themselves with $25.7 million to work with as the NFL new league year approaches.
With NFL Free agency opening this Wednesday, March 13th at 4 PM, the Eagles are already making noise with rumors flying that they are ‘in’ on some big names. This front office is known to be aggressive and could be ramping up to lure in a big-time name.
At the top of the list is Le’Veon Bell who is likely the ‘apple of their eye’. And while the Jets seem the front runner to land the 3x Pro-Bowler, Philadelphia is reportedly hiding in the weeds ready to pounce. Bell has flirted with the idea of coming to Philly on Twitter in the past, and even reposted Bryce Harper hitting him up in his Instagram DMs.
The Eagles were also linked to Antonio Brown for a short period of time before he was allegedly traded earlier this weekend to the Raiders. Even though they missed out on the top wideout in the league, the Eagles have continued to pop up in trade talks and free agency rumors. This includes rumors of trading for Cleveland running back Duke Johnson and signing Tevin Coleman.
The overall takeaway from this is the Birds continue to be mentioned around the league as a team who want to make a splash after clearing significant cap space this offseason. As the NFL’s legal tampering period is set to kick off on Monday, clubs can begin to contact unrestricted free agents and we should learn a little bit more about who could be the newest addition to the Philadelphia Eagles.
