Ugly first half too much to overcome, Eagles fall to 2-3

The Eagles saw their losing streak extended with a 23-21 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Philadelphia, dropping them to 2-3 on the season.

Philadelphia’s slow start caused the team to drop below .500 for the first time since December 18th, 2016. The offensive line once again made it tough for Carson Wentz to pick apart a Vikings defense and get into any kind of rhythm early on. The Vikings controlled the game for most of the game, holding on to the lead to move to 2-2-1.

Minnesota took a 10-3 lead when Carson Wentz was sacked and fumbled into the arms of Linval Joseph who scampered 64 yards into the end zone untouched. The Vikings would extend their lead to 20-3 before the Eagles would respond.

Carson Wentz and Wendell Smallwood connected to bring the Eagles closer to start the 4th quarter, but the Vikings added a late field goal to put the game out of reach after the Eagles passed up an opportunity to kick a 55-yard field goal that would have cut the lead to three with 9:01 left on the clock.

Philadelphia would add a meaningless touchdown from Zach Ertz before being unable to recover an onside kick, leading to a kneel down to conclude the game.

Wentz finished the game 24/35 for 311 yards and 2 TDs (115.3 QB rating) in the losing effort while Adam Theilen and Stefon Diggs combined for 17 receptions and 207 yards.

With the loss, the Eagles now fall to 3rd in the NFC East division and hold a 1-2 record in the conference. This is their second loss in a row after failing to score more than 24 points in any game this season.

The Birds will have to quickly pull it together as they’ll head up the turnpike for a Thursday Night Football clash with the New York Giants, who fell to 1-4 this afternoon on a last second 60-yard field goal by Graham Gano of the Carolina Panthers.
