Back for the 2018 season is our New to the Nest series which profiles the free agents and rookies the Eagles brought in this past offseason as we hit a break in the action waiting for Training Camp to begin in mid-July. This series will highlight player bio and contract terms, and make a healthy projection for the upcoming season. We kick off the series with newcomer Michael Bennett.
Bio/Contract: The Eagles traded for 3x Pro-Bowl Defensive End Michael Bennett and a 7th round draft pick on March 14th. Bennett comes with a $5.6 Million dollar salary in 2018 with an option year in 2019. Bennett enters his 10th season after being an undrafted free agent in 2009. He brings a veteran status and unique rushing ability from both the end and inside position on the defensive line.
Career: Michael Bennett steps into this upcoming season having played in 125 career regular season, and 10 postseason games on his way to one Super Bowl ring with Seattle. His career regular season stat line is listed below.
Projection: Bennett will likely be apart of a deep defensive line rotation for the Eagles and successfully contribute in this role. Last season as a full-time starter, he was second on Seattle in sacks at 8.5 which would have also been 2nd on the Eagles in 2017 to Brandon Graham (9.5). In a limited role, Bennett will provide a spark much like Chris Long did last year. We fully expect Michael Bennett to bring consistent pressure and disrupt the opposing QB. Something to look for besides sacks is forcing fumbles, something the Eagles reserves did at crucial times last season.
- Part two of the series will feature the exciting second-round draft selection of Dallas Goedert.
