The Eagles are back in action today after a break from on the field for Organized Team Activities. Off the field, the team continued to show support in the community as they built a playground for Horatio B. Hackett School in Kensington. With training camp roughly six weeks away, here’s what you should be following for the rest of OTAs:
5: The Defensive Line
With Brandon Graham, Timmy Jernigan, and Derek Barnett all recovering from surgery, younger guys are looking to earn a spot. Michael Bennett has elected to not participate in OTAs while the 4th-round pick of Josh Sweat is a guy everyone seems to be excited about.
4: Corey Nelson
after the release of Mychal Kendricks, Corey Nelson seems to be the guy next in line for the third linebacker spot. Nelson comes over from Denver as a seventh-round pick who is known for his pass defense. The Eagles play in a sub package on defense 70% of the time, so having him as an insurance plan to Jordan Hicks is a good thing.
3: Sidney Jones
By all accounts, Sidney Jones is turning heads at OTAs. The real thing to watch here is how the secondary shakes out. Does somebody move to Safety? Who wins the outside corner positions and who is the slot corner? Of course, there’s a lot of time to figure this out.
2: The Backfield
The backfield seems hungry and for good reason. Corey Clement said he wants to obtain a bigger role in the offense, and Jay Ajayi wants to remain the workhorse back. With Darren Sproles returning on a one year deal, who else can crack the roster? Much has been said about Donnel Pumphrey gaining strength, however, he will have to compete with Smallwood and UDFA Josh Adams from Notre Dame for the final spot.
1: Carson Wentz
Surprise right? From what we’ve seen, Wentz hasn’t looked pretty good early in the offseason workouts. His health is without a doubt the biggest storyline at any time leading up to the week one opener which is now under 100 days away.
More to come.
